Plant Pass supports plant producers to take a proactive approach to biosecurity

What is Plant Pass?

Plant Pass is a systematic approach to biosecurity risk management in nurseries.

It is a voluntary certification scheme that enables plant producers to protect their plants, their customers and our environment, economy and way of life from pest and pathogen threats.

Plant Pass is all about healthy plants for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Benefits of Plant Pass:

  • Improved biosecurity practices and risk management in plant nurseries.

  • Reduced likelihood of a pest or disease establishing in a nursery and being spread by the domestic plant trade.

  • Protecting plant buyers in New Zealand’s domestic and export fruit and vegetable sectors, vineyard, forestry, greenlife (amenity and garden), urban and afforestation markets.

  • Improved traceability and recall for plants, facilitating rapid tracing in a biosecurity response.

  • Harnessing the critical skills and observations that exist in the plant production industry to strengthen biosecurity and the biosecurity team of five million New Zealanders.

We all have a role to play.

Trusted producers

Plant producers who achieve certification demonstrate strong biosecurity risk and hazard management. They become part of a growing network of known and trusted producers. Customers are assured plants have been raised in conditions that minimise the likelihood of the spread of plant pests and diseases.

Systemic approach

Plant Pass formalises and develops current nursery practices to increase resilience, trust and license to operate. It is Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) based i.e. hazards are identified, control measures are implemented and processes are monitored to support continuous improvement.
