What is Plant Pass?
Plant Pass is a systematic approach to biosecurity risk management in nurseries. It is a voluntary certification scheme that enables plant producers to protect their plants, their customers and Aotearoa’s environment, economy and way of life.

Why do we need Plant Pass?
Plant producers operate in an environment that is exposed to significant and continual pest and disease threats. Spread of these threats could devastate our domestic or export trade. Plant Pass puts in place preventative biosecurity measures.

Plant Pass assesses risks that are common across nurseries and provides guidance around the measures that must be taken in order to maintain healthy plants.
This includes, training, hygiene, crop protection, monitoring and traceability.

There is no set time frame between being registered and being certified. For well-equipped producers, certification might take a few months, while others might take a year or so. But throughout the certification process, improved systems will protect the livelihoods of producers’, their plants, customers and receiving environments.

Plant producers often operate in environments where they are exposed to significant and continual pest threats, from established and new incursions.
Some new legislation, such as the Biosecurity (National PA Pest Management Plan) on kauri dieback disease, require plant producers to show proof that they practice good biosecurity.
Plant Pass provides a one stop shop for biosecurity risk management. It is an established Operational Agreement (OA) under GIA, the Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response framework.

If your nursery is Plant Pass certified, then you’ll have a readiness and response plan in place.
The response steps to a suspected incursion by an exotic pest or disease are:
Report the incursion to MPI on the free hotline 0800 80 99 66 or use the online report form.
